This was a personal project that was born from a work assignment. I needed to make a simple Boston skyline for a client and as the image progressed, I started to wonder what it would look like in motion. After finishing the vector in Illustrator, I used After Effects to make a simple time lapse motion graphic. I wanted to highlight some of my favorite things that make the city unique, like the Duck Boats, the light on the Berkeley Building that tells the weather, and the iconic Citgo sign. The first draft of the video used minimal color like the original vector, but I felt that making it full color would make it more interesting.
After adding color, I realized the day half of the video needed more motion, so I added the Hood Blimp and a second duck boat. At night I included how the Prudential spells out messages in their windows, and the colored lights at the top that coincide with events and holidays– in this case, green for the Celtics.
